More Dew

More news on the Pepsi/Dew “Throwback” front: the (potential) bottle designs.

The Pepsi one looks pretty nice; I like the old-school Pepsi globe and the red, white and blue scheme which hasn’t been really used on Pepsi in some time since they switched to almost entirely blue 10-15 years ago. A relatively elegant design, though maybe just a wee bit on the excessive side.

The Mountain Dew one looks pretty stupid though, with the cartoony typeface for the “Throwback” and “made with real sugar” bits. Obviously the classic Dew logo is great, but that other shit just dumb.

Also, BevReview suggests that these will only be available in 20oz bottles, which I can’t endorse. This needs to be in cans and 2-liters. Well, obviously it needs to be in glass bottles, but I doubt they’re going to do that.

A Very Very VERY Important Announcement

Mountain Dew Throwback logo

Pepsi is going to be releasing “Pepsi Throwback” and “Mountain Dew Throwback”, both formulated with real, actual sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, which Pepsi and Coca-Cola switched to around 1985.

The major (and I do mean major) drawback is that the Throwback versions will only be available until June 13, which is less than two months. Hopefully they wise up and make this a permanent fixture of their lineup, because, well, sugar in soda is far superior to HFCS in soda.

The only thing that would make this better (besides permanence) would be glass bottles. I used to walk to the supermarket down the street from my grandparents’ house in Wisconsin and buy glass bottles of Mountain Dew when I was little, in the early 80s before the HFCS soda switch happened. There was also a super-awesome and rather old glass-bottle-dispensing soda machine at the Labor Temple (which I am 98% certain was the Cavalier CSS-64) that I would get it from.

Anyway, if this stuff is only going to be sold for a couple of months, I’m stockpiling.
