Buckner
Bill Buckner threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox home opener today. I think it’s great. Despite what most people tend to remember him for, Buckner was actually a really, really good player. He ranks in the top 50 all-time in singles, doubles, games played, at-bats, sac flies, and also lead the league in doubles twice and was the 1980 NL batting champ. He’s also 54th all-time in hits — not too shabby.
A lot of people on the Boston internets are whining about what a horrible choice it is, but seriously, if these people can’t let it go after the Red Sox won not just one but two World Series in the 22 years since Buckner made one measly error, they should probably reassess their priorities in life and but baseball a few dozen notches lower than they’ve got it now.
Anyway, a pretty funny comment was made on the boston.com Extra Bases weblog: “If the Varitek has any sense of humor at all, he’ll let the throw go between his legs.”
